Today we did a loop from Silverton,
across Hurricane Pass (13,238 ft elevation), California Gulch (12,930 ft
elevation) and into Animas Forks and back to Silverton. The rest of the seven vehicles in our group
came back on Picayne/Placer. I was remiss in taking pictures of the old mines and mills today. Promise to get those another time before the summer is over. Today was another trial run for me. Once at higher elevations, my oxygen sats did drop so, we cut the trip short. I didn't take all the pictures I normally would.
Leaving Silverton, we traveled thru
the Gladstone area along Cement Creek. I
am encouraged by the appearance of cleaner water in Cement Creek. There are several settling ponds set up
to clean-up last year's mine blowout.
Quite a few old mining operations can
be seen from the Gladstone trail as we travel along the trees. We will explore this area more later &
get some good pictures.
We started up the Hurricane Pass trail
and tried a side-road to the backside of the SunnySide Saddle, but were stopped
by ice.
